The winners from the IPextreme Constellations 2010 conference in Silicon Valley on March 31, 2010 stopped by the IPextreme office in downtown Campbell to claim their price.
Zhao Wu of Cisco and Alex Tesler of IP Cores were the two winners. Unlike a traditional "lucky draw" that many of us in the industry has seen for so many years, Zhao and Alex really earned their prize. Attendees competed to win the iPad by taking a final exam to test their knowledge of the material presented during the day. The person with the most correct answers won. Zhao and Alex tied, scoring a remarkable 15 or 18 correct. Great job guys!
Have a look at the happy new iPad owners.

Our Constellations partner Chips & Media will be exhibiting their multimedia IP portfolio at the upcoming Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose. Here's all the details:
Thanks to everyone for a great event together last Wednesday. Feedback from the attendees was unanimously positive, including my favorite "this is the best event of its type that I've ever attended, there was a real dialog between the audience and the presenting companies!" That's just the kind of event we had hoped to achieve and thankful for everyone who took time out from their busy day to attend. Its too bad that we accidentally scheduled this in parallel with the Synopsys SNUG meeting, we'll do better next time. :)
I'd also like to give a special thanks to Ted Chan from AMCC, who participated in our business session panel in the morning, and also to Ron Wilson of EDN magazine who moderated our technical session panel in the afternoon which had such enthusiastic audience participation that I finally had to stop the session after going over 75 minutes. I think you guys could have went on all night. Ron did a nice wrap up on the panel which can be found here on his EDN blog page.
Thanks to Bill Rogers who shared his experience on the event on the IPextreme blog page.
Prizes were given out during the day during the presentations that included cash, clocks, pens, and caps. It seemed everyone had some fun.
Capping off the day were two large give-aways. Hal Barbour of CAST gave away an "EYE-FI" geo-tagging SD card for your camera to automatically geotag and upload your pictures to a web site, which was won by Isaac Achler. The big prize given on behalf of all the Constellations companies was an iPad, and rather than a simple random draw, we gave a sure to be famous "pop quiz" to the audience who competed with their other attendees to win it. The quiz had 18 questions whose answer could not be found in the conference materials, rewarding those who pay attention. At the end of the day we had two guests who scored a tie at 15 correct answers, they were Alex Tesler and Zhao Wu. An executive decision was made at the end to award iPads to both people. I picked those up from the Apple store on Saturday and Alex and Zhao will receive them this week.
Finally, for those of you who missed the event and would still like to see the slides, we have uploaded them here for your benefit below. Please feel free to share the link with your colleagues who may be interested.
The Constellations group is holding a cool all-day event at the Techmart Center in Silicon Valley on March 31. Its a free event, but seating is limited. If you have anything to do with semiconductor IP, head to the web site to reserve your ticket while they last.
The Host Controller IP supports SD Host 3.0, SDIO 3.0, and eMMC4.4 specifications. SD 3.0 is four times faster than the earlier generation. SD 2.0 is prevalent and natural progression for the consumer companies is to go to higher data rate/throughput by upgrading to SD 3.0.
Secure Digital (SD) is the de-facto standard for consumer devices such as
camera, mobile phones, and Mobile Internet Devices. Posedge Universal
SD/SDIO/eMMC Host controller core offers complete silicon proven
solution and provides a significant time-to-market advantage to
customers. The IP comes with Standard Host controller device drivers to
help accelerate the integration of the core and is interoperated with
third-party vendor solutions.
The IP industry like the rest of the semiconductor ecosystem has been under significant stress in the last year and the worldwide economy has collapsed and now is slowly crawling back to life. Fortunately the world needs IP more than ever after slashing employment. That said, there is incredible pressure on IP pricing as semiconductor companies preserve their cash as much as possible while their sales begin to regain stability.
We are seeing increasing very creative business proposals as a result of cash-strapped customers looking for ways to get very valuable IP for the lowest price. I found this very funny You Tube video that is not far off from some of the "offers" we have seen out there. Enjoy.
As mentioned in the previous blog posting, Constellations members sponsored an IP lunch forum during the 46th Design Automation Conference. For those that did not travel to DAC this year or missed us at the Constellations event "The Changing Face of the IP Industry", we’d like to invite you to view the presentations online.
The session begins with an insightful at the IP industry from Jim Hogan, followed by an introduction to the Constellations Program and presentations from member companies: CAST, IPextreme, Sidense and Sonics.
If you would like more information on how the Constellations Program could benefit your company, please contact us.
On behalf of the Constellations companies, I'd like to welcome you to the Constellations blog page. We encourage people reading the posts here to interact with the authors and make this is living, breathing conversation within the community of companies supporting the semiconductor industry.
It's worth at least one post to explain to readers what Constellations is all about and why we are all excited about it. Simply put, Constellations is a group of IP companies that collaborate with one another by helping those companies find customers who need their IP. By teaming up with each other, the Constellations forms a sales network that is vastly larger than any individual company. As more companies join the Constellations program the number of "feet on the street" grows.
CAST, IPextreme, Sidense, and Sonics are hosting a free luncheon from 12:15-1:30pm on July 29th at DAC in the Moscone Center in San Francisco and welcome customers and potential Constellations members alike to join us.
